walnuts-in-shell Purdue University study finds that people who snacked on 500 extra calories worth of cocktail peanuts every day for 8 weeks didn’t gain weight. Researchers assumes that the healthy fats, fiber, and protein in nuts are so filling that study volunteers ate less at other times of the day without even realizing it. Crunchy peanuts also raised metabolism. Study author Richard Mattes, PhD, RD. says that Evidence suggests that consumption of walnuts, pecans, and almonds also has little impact on body weight.

How many nuts equal 500 calories? Marianne McGinnis estimates in this list

Almonds 5/8 cup, about 73
Pecans 5/8 cup, about 45 halves
Walnuts 5/8 cup, about 25 halves
Roasted peanuts 1/2 cup, about 122
Cocktail peanuts 3/8 cup, about 103
